Laryngitis and sore throat can leave you feeling uncomfortable and distressed. 

Here are some symptoms of laryngitis mentioned below:

AYURVEDIC REMEDIES FOR LARYNGITIS

HERBS:

1. TURMERIC:

Consume turmeric as it includes anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties, heals laryngitis and helps in regaining the natural sweetness of the voice. 

To consume turmeric:

  • A pinch of turmeric and a tablespoon of honey mixed with warm milk can be consumed to ease the sore throat. 
  • Add a pinch of turmeric powder to warm water and use it to gargle. Gargle with it twice a day to soothe the throat.

2. LICORICE 

In Ayurveda, Licorice is a star herb for laryngitis relief. Its anti-bacterial properties help form a protective coating on the vocal cords, reducing irritation and promoting healing. 

To consume licorice:

  • Add a few pieces of licorice root to a cup of boiling water. Let it steep for 10-15 minutes, strain, and drink this soothing tea twice a day.
  • Soak a few pieces of licorice root and keep it overnight. Strain the pieces in the morning and have them on an empty stomach. 

3. LEMON

They are best to fight against infections. Lemon will therefore help in fighting against bacterial infections and viruses. 

To consume lemon:

  • Lemons can be consumed via salt water and honey.
  • Prepare a soothing herbal tea using herbs like licorice, ginger, or tulsi. After steeping the herbal tea, add a squeeze of lemon juice to it. 

4.  TULSI LEAVES

The ‘mother medicine of nature,’ tulsi leaves are best to cure and clear mucus and throat region therefore will heal the airways and ailment effectively. 

To consume tulsi leaves:

  • Add fresh tulsi leaves to boiling water. Let it steep for 5 minutes, strain, and enjoy. 
  • Inhale the steam from a few tulsi leaves boiled in water. Cover your head with a towel to trap the steam and breathe in the healing vapors.

GINGER 

A decongestant and anti-inflammatory herb, ginger help in reducing the pain and swelling in the throat, and further relieves discomfort in the throat region. 

To consume ginger:

  • Add fresh ginger root to boiling water. Let it steep for 5-10 minutes, strain, and sip this soothing tea.
  • Extract the juice from fresh ginger and mix it with honey. Consume a teaspoon of this mixture two to three times a day. Ginger’s anti-inflammatory properties can help in reducing throat irritation.

DIETARY CHANGES:

Drink warm water at intervals to reduce inflammation and soothe the throat and infection. 

Opt for easily digestible, warm, and light foods like soups, broths, cooked vegetables, and soft grains. Avoid spicy, oily, and cold foods that further irritate your throat.

Adequate hydration is essential for the throat, consume herbal teas and warm liquid throughout the day. Warm drinks, like soothing herbal teas with honey, can alleviate throat irritation and support healing.

Specifically for laryngitis, it is essentially and importantly recommended to incorporate foods rich in Vitamin- C, A, and E that will keep the mucus lining of the throat healthy. 

LIFESTYLE MODALITIES:

  • Give your voice and throat the much-needed rest that relieves the tension in the throat region. Refrain from shouting or speaking loudly. 
  • Inhale the steam from a bowl of hot water infused with a few drops of eucalyptus oil. Steam inhalations can relieve congestion and ease breathing.
  • Incorporate herbs and spices with anti-inflammatory properties into meals.
  • Herbal gargles with warm water and salt can help soothe the throat and reduce inflammation.
  • Avoid irritants like smoke, dust, and pollutants that can flare up laryngitis symptoms. These can further inflame the vocal cords and hinder healing.
  • Add and practice different yoga asanas and meditation techniques as they both will heal and strengthen the vocal cord.
