What is an Agricultural Engineer?

By juliaJune 7, 2023 News

Agricultural engineering is a branch of engineering that focuses on the design but not the design of websites, like https://www.playamo.com/en-NZ/games/roulette-games, but construction, and enhancement of farm machinery and equipment.

This discipline involves working with technology to improve the efficiency of farming. For instance, agricultural engineers are able to design new and improved equipment that will work more effectively. Furthermore, they build various structures such as dams and warehouses.

For engineers in this field, the development of new biofuels from agricultural waste and algae is a promising project. These fuels could be economically and environmentally sustainable alternatives to gasoline.

What Do Agricultural Engineers Do?

Although many agricultural engineers pursue specialized fields, most of them are still involved in core activities. For instance, they usually test and design various components and equipment for farming. They develop structures for food storage and processing plants, as well.

For individuals who are passionate about sustainability, agricultural engineers provide advice on how to improve the quality of water and manage pollution in the environment. They oversee the reclamation of land on farms. Some of them are involved in the development of carbon sequestration facilities.

Where Does an Agricultural Engineer Work?

Almost all agricultural engineers were working in related services. Some of them were working for the federal government, while others were in food manufacturing. In addition, around 13% of them worked in the construction, mining, and agriculture sectors.

In addition to working indoors, agricultural engineers also spend their time outside. They are involved in overseeing projects and inspecting sites as well as monitor the equipment and look for issues with water management and reclamation projects.

These positions usually involve traveling a lot. Aside from working in laboratories, these engineers may also spend their time in classrooms and collaborating with other experts. For instance, some engineers work with scientists such as geneticists and agronomists.

What Are Work Schedules Like?

An agricultural engineer typically works full-time, with occasional overtime. They often spend long hours developing projects, especially when the weather is favorable. They are also frequently called upon to address issues that may arise.

What Is the Job Demand for Agricultural Engineers?

Despite the increasing reliance on agriculture, the demand for agricultural engineers is expected to remain relatively low in the next few years. Researchers are still looking for new ways to improve the yield of crops and develop new technologies.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) noted that in 2020, there were about 1,500 individuals working in the agricultural engineering industry in the US. The outlook for the industry’s growth is moderate, with an expected 5% increase from 2020 to 2030.

Getting an Agricultural Engineering Degree

A bachelor’s degree in agricultural engineering is required for entry-level positions. Usually, these programs are conducted in a variety of subjects such as science, engineering, and math. While in college, students can also participate in cooperative programs that provide them with practical experience.

Professional agricultural engineers are required to be licensed to provide their services to the public.

After passing the FE exam, an individual should have at least four years of relevant work experience and a passing score on the PE exam.

Upon graduating from college, students can immediately take the FE exam. Those who pass this exam are referred to as engineers in training or interns. After four years of working experience, these individuals can then proceed with the PE exam to become licensed engineers.

In some states, engineers are required to participate in various activities in order to maintain their licenses. Some states also recognize the licensure of other individuals from other states.

Several colleges in the US offer agricultural engineering programs with a specialization in agriculture. Most students pursue a standard engineering degree and major in one of the fields, such as land planning or Geographic Information Systems. They should also demonstrate strong math, English, or physics abilities.

The field of engineering is regarded as a highly sought-after STEM subject, and it is also very well-paid. With that in mind, most people will not find it hard to find work that they want regardless of their qualifications.

Even though a postgraduate degree in agricultural engineering can greatly improve your employability, you should steer clear of this field and look for opportunities outside of it. For instance, if you are interested in working in academia, you might be able to find a job within the field, but it is typically one of the lowest-paying positions.
