Cricket in India: A popular national sport

India is known for its love of sports, but among all kinds of games, cricket has a special place in the hearts of Indians. The game has become an integral part of their culture and national identity. Every day, on the pitches and in the backyards, children and adults alike take up bats and balls to become the next cricket star.

Kabaddi: Unparalleled popularity in the Indian sports world

Capturing the hearts of millions of Indians, Kabaddi is a massively popular sport in the country. The game quickly gained unprecedented popularity, especially after the launch of the Pro Kabaddi League in 2014. All over India, the ecstasy of viewers was felt. Kabaddi is particularly beloved in North and South India, as well as in the states. Many outstanding players come from Haryana. The Indian national team has won the audience’s hearts and become an unbeaten champion at Asian Cups and World Cups.

Kabaddi requires:

  • physical strength; 
  • incredible speed; 
  • endurance from its players, which are so characteristic of Indian athletes. 

Players start their journey with local competitions, gradually moving to the national level and even entering the international arena, where they compete with the most vigorous opponents.

Football in India: The road to gradual development

Football, the most popular sport globally, has less influence in India. It has yet to win the hearts of the mass audience the way cricket or kabaddi did. Various rankings show that football is inferior to other sports, even horse racing. The national team and local clubs do not dominate their competitions, somewhat undermining their popularity. Although Indian football players cannot take a leading position on the international stage, they are recognized as mid-level players in Asia for life.

Badminton: rise in popularity and its role in India

In recent years, badminton has become a trendy sport in India. International stars such as Saina Nehwal, PV Sindhu, and Kidambi Srikanth have contributed immensely to promoting badminton as an exciting sport. India’s connection with badminton goes back a long way. India has played an essential role in developing badminton, which has become world-famous. The Badminton Association of India (BAI), founded in 1899, is one of the oldest badminton governing organizations in the world, second only to the Badminton Association of England (BAE) in terms of years of existence.

Badminton has always been a popular pastime in India and has served as a fitness means for people. Since the early 2000s, the sport has experienced a significant boom. Badminton in India has a solid fan base. Even as a game played indoors, people in India also play badminton on outdoor courts due to limited access to indoor sports complexes. Today, badminton in India has become a serious professional sport. Regional tournaments, national competitions, the Yonex India Superseries, and the BWF World Tour have become annual events in the badminton calendar. These events are regularly organized to identify new talent. 

Hockey: Reviving the sport in India

While trying to return to its glory days of winning medals at the Olympic Games, hockey in India continues to struggle. The introduction of artificial turf has had a positive impact on the development of the game. Still, the transition from grass to artificial turf has challenged Indian players’ use of traditional lawns. Internal problems in the hockey federation have weakened Indian hockey, allowing other countries to approach Indian dominance. Despite this, some successes have been achieved, as evidenced by the bronze medal at the 2020 Olympic Games.

Despite the unexpected decline of hockey, notable progress is being made in reviving it at a high level, showing a desire to restore the hockey culture in India. It requires addressing systemic issues and developing domestic competitions, like our hockey league. We already have the Hockey India League (HIL), modelled after the cricket IPL launched in 2013 to bring hockey to broader attention. The International Ice Hockey Federation has recognized this tournament and has attracted the best players worldwide.

In addition to traditional outdoor sports, India is developing various alternative outdoor activities. Due to the country’s vast geographical diversity, India offers a wide range of sporting adventures.
